Homemade Natural Insect Repellent
¾ ounce Jojoba or Soy Oil
3 ounces Vodka
1/8 tsp (each) Essential Oils of:
Lemon Eucalyptus
Lavender
Citronella
Peppermint
Lemongrass
Cedarwood
Tea Tree
Directions:
Add ingredients to a 4 oz spray bottle, shake well before each use.
This recipe is not for use on babies and small children. Other oils that are known to repel insects are thyme, clove, fennel, geranium and celery extract.

Oh this is a great recipe. I shall put some together. We have more midges here than where we used to live, as we're now in the beautiful countryside.

Oh do Nat, it works great and smells good too. I even spray it around my entry doors, everyone loves the aroma as they walk up. This little recipe has brought mounds of people here through searches, nice to know they are looking for natural solutions.

Is there any worry about using the lavendar essential oil with a baby boy? I had heard somewhere that lavendar might be associated with estrogen like properties and to use caution with boys, but didn't know for sure. Thanks!

Hi Lisa,
I do not have experience in using essential oils on babies, this recipe is intended for adults (which I will make note of in the post) and I "would not" recommend using it on a baby.
For your question on the lavender essential oil, I will refer you to the NAHA (National Association For Holistic Aromatherapy) website: http://www.naha.org/.
Click on the Aromatherapy Safety link: http://www.naha.org/safety.htm and you will see a list of articles, several which relate to your concern, such as:
http://www.naha.org/articles/Tisserand%20Robert%20PressRelease_2007.pdf
and
http://www.naha.org/articles/Tisserand,%20R.%20Gynecomastia2_2007.pdf .
I hope this helps.
Kindly,
Pennie Mills
